The International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy 2018 (ICSGCE 2018)
Date: 29 – 31 May 2018
Venue: Sungai Long Campus

The International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy 2018 (ICSGCE 2018) was successfully held at Sungai Long Campus from 29 to 31 May 2018.

The local organising committee consists of UTAR Centre for Power Systems and Electricity Chairperson Prof Lim Yun Seng, Dr Chua Kein Huat and Dr Wong Jianhui. The conference aimed to create a platform for researchers and engineers to exchange their latest findings and knowledge regarding the Smart Grid and Clean Energy Technologies. It also provided a good opportunity to meet up with several well-known researchers in the field of Smart Grid and Clean Energy for potential collaboration in research projects.

The sponsors of the conference were UTAR, IEEE, and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). There were participants from Switzerland, France, Germany, Norway, China, Taiwan, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Prof Chuah delivering his welcome speech

In his welcoming remarks, UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik addressed eight challenges in the next two decades that should be given highlights and attention in making the world a better place. These include famine, clean water supply, ageing population and energy efficiency.

In his speech, he also emphasised on the roles that engineers play, “The solutions to these problems are not only meant to be sought by the people in the medical field, instead engineers should also work hand in hand to provide solutions through systems, robots or even mechanism that can improve the current condition.” Regarding energy efficiency, he appreciated the amount of effort and attention given in making energy more efficient and added, “Energy cannot get any cheaper, it will only be more expensive in the future. I am very glad that we are all working on this very important aspect particularly on clean energy and smart grid.”

Prof Lim giving a keynote speech on the energy storage system

Conference Organising Chairperson Prof Lim said, “Developing an effective smart grid has been a very important research focus in power system as it covers a wide range of research areas. This conference provides a platform for exchange of knowledge regarding smart grid from all over the world. Academia and industrials are gathering here today to present and explore smart grid solutions regarding smart grid infrastructure, software communication to security.”

In line with Prof Chuah’s summons, Senior Member of IEEE Prof Nasrudin bin Abd Rahim in his keynote speech mentioned the challenges of power electronics in the renewable energy (solar energy). “One of the challenges is to find technical solutions to reduce the possible cost for large series production. The lowest cost design is only possible by combining the knowledge and efforts of several disciplines and by close cooperation between component, module and system design,” he said.
