Consultancy & Commercialisation Report

This report presents the consultancy and commercialisation statistics and activities for the year 2018.

Consultancy

The consultancy activities have made steady progress over the past years. In year 2018, 623 applications were approved with an estimated value of RM2,491,713.13 as shown in Figure 1. This involved 467 UTAR staff as shown in Figure 2.

From the total of RM2,491,713.13, 61% is under the category of Personal Consultancy while 39% is under the category University Consultancy as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 4 shows the approved value by unit. Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) has the largest share at 32.1% of the total approved amount in 2018. This is followed by Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) at 15.4% and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at 10.9%.

Figure 5 shows the percentage value of approved projects by categories for the year 2018. Training constitutes 41% of all approved projects. This is followed by R&D at 31% and Consultancy at 26%.

Commercialisation Activities

In 2018, UTAR has

  1. Received RM10,000 as royalty payment for the invention “Lightweight Concrete Infill Buoyant System”.
  2. Approved the setting up of a spin-off company (Ecotricity Sdn Bhd) by Prof Lim Yun Seng, Dr Wong Jianhui and Dr Chua Kein Huat.

Number of patents filed: In 2018, UTAR has submitted 2 patent applications. The details of the invention are:

  1. Stabilized Islanded Operation of a Distribution Network Using Fuzzy-based Control (PI 2018700169)

Figure 6 shows the number of patents filed for the period 2008 to 2018. The current status for the 23 inventions is given in Table 1.

Besides Malaysia, UTAR filed for foreign patent application. The status is shown in Table 2

Prospect for the Year 2019

DCC is continuously working with business and industry associations such as Federation of Manufacturers Malaysia (FMM) and Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (KLSCCCI) to enhance UTAR's collaboration with the SME/SMI. This will promote and encourage consultancy and commercialisation works amongst the academia as well as to align its efforts in elevating UTAR's status.
