Annual Report 2018

UNIVERSITI TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN

Foreword from
UTAR Vice President
(R&D AND COMMERCIALISATION)

In today’s competitive and globalised world, R&D and Innovation are the drivers of a country’s development. Without R&D and Innovation, valuable knowledge remains undiscovered and subsequently, hinders technological advancement for the progression of human civilisation. UTAR places great importance on R&D and Innovation in support of the Malaysian Government’s Economic Transformation Plan and UTAR’s transformation into a world recognised research-focused university. UTAR, since its establishment in 2002, has put in place the necessary ecosystem to inculcate the culture of research among its community, such as the introduction of UTAR Research Roadmap, the UTAR Research Fund policy, the UTAR Global Research Network, the establishment of Research Centres and the emphasis on research collaborations with local industry partners and renowned universities.

To date, UTAR has set up 32 research centres to spearhead R&D activities from various disciplines and more than 1,300 academic staff are involved in the R&D activities. Through the dedication of our researchers and support from the management, UTAR has achieved strong research in Renewable Energy, Stem Cell, Cybersecurity, Smart Agriculture, Wastewater Treatment, Cancer Research, E-Commerce, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Behavioural Science, Plant Physiology, Chinese Studies, Construction Management, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Sensor Research.

This R&D Annual Report attempts to showcase the University’s efforts and achievements in high impact R&D projects, Research Publications, Research Collaborations, activities by UTAR Research Centres, Consultancies and Awards received. These represent the research portfolio of UTAR and it is, therefore, important to share the information to our stakeholders including the industry, governmental agencies, international and local partners, current and prospective students and other interested parties. UTAR will continue to strive towards excellence in its R&D endeavour.
