FAM receives research grant from MTDC

UTAR’s Centre for Computing and Intelligence Systems (CCIS) and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) Wood Anatomy Lab created a mobile wood identification system known as MyWood-ID. It was launched at Forest Research Institute Malaysia, Kepong on 2 Feb 2018, in conjunction with the launching of FRIM Inc.

Present at the launching ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, NRE Secretary General-cum-FRIM Chairman Dato’ Sri Azizan Ahmad, FRIM Director General (DG) Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod; heads and representatives of agencies/departments under NRE; FRIM’s collaborative partners; industry players; stakeholders and Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) representatives and UTAR CCIS Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Tay Yong Haur and Master of Engineering Science student Tang Xin Jie.

Both UTAR and FRIM researchers have been conducting research for more than two years in creating a mobile application which is able to identify different types of Malaysian timbers. The technology is cost effective and will be useful for stakeholders in the timber industry, timber graders, timber inspectors, quality control inspectors, forest department, log checking stations and enforcement officers.
