Internal Funding

UTAR Research Fund (UTARRF) is an internal research grant scheme designed to provide seed funding to support UTAR researchers and students in implementing research projects and research related activities.

UTARRF was established since 2005 with an initial amount of RM1 million allocated per annum. The allocation is intended to serve as seed fund to kick-start implementation of projects with good potential. This amount was subsequently increased to RM3 million in year 2010.

In years 2011 till 2014, the University management further increased the annual allocation for UTARRF to RM5 million per year to to enable additional and larger scale projects to be initiated as well as boost research & development activities geared towards realizing the goal to transform UTAR into a research intensive university. As of 31 December 2014, the accumulated UTARRF amount allocated is RM28 million (Figure 1).

The University, guided by stringent and careful grant approval procedures, had initially approved a funding amount of RM516,500.00 in 2006. The amount continued to register growth in the years following with a total of RM5.3 million awarded in 2014. As of 31 December 2014, the accumulated UTARRF amount awarded is RM27.8 million (Figure 2).

From the RM5.3 million that was approved in 2014, a total of RM4.28 million was awarded for 134 research projects in UTARRF Cycle 1 and 2 2014. The breakdown of the awarded projects by Faculties/Institute is shown in Figure 3.

External Funding

Experienced UTAR researchers are well-recognized for their research work. Since 2005, they have secured external funding in projects. Figure 4 below shows the amount of external fundings received (funding in UTAR) by our researchers as well as their collaboration with other organisations (funding not in UTAR) from years 2005 until 2014.

*Note: The funding amount is reflected in the original year the funding is approved, not in the actual disbursement year.

In year 2014, a total amount of RM5.79 million was secured by the researchers (funding in UTAR) from external funding sources listed in Chart 1. UTAR researchers had also actively collaborated with other organisations/institutions (funding not in UTAR) in numerous external funded research projects amounting to a total of RM3.7 million. The funding organisations/institutions are shown in Chart 2.
