Centre Name:

Centre for VLSI Design

Chairperson:

Mr. Tang Chong Ming

Description of Centre:

Since the invention of transistor in 1947 and eventually building of first planar miniaturized transistor in 1960, integrated circuit technology has evolved from small scale integration SSI into today‘s VLSI/ULSI scaling. The integrated circuit technology has played a tremendous role in the advancement of ICT particularly in the computer application, control, communication, space exploration, etc. The total world sale of semiconductor today is more than USD250 billion a year.

The centre would provide training, consultation, design provider, and research & development for VLSI integrated circuit design in terms of design methodology, algorithmic flow. The activity also includes packaging design and test/measurement methods and implementation for students, academic staff, researchers, and industrialists.

Research area:

Being an institution of higher learning with the aims of not only teaching but also much emphasizing on research and development, the push to be forefront and authority in the VLSI research area is a need. Thus, choosing research and development in the area of VLSI design, which has not seen the end of the boundary of research and development, would comply and accelerate for achieving the aims of the university in the near future.

4th VLSI Center meeting, 22 December 2014

On 22 December 2014, the centre chairman gave a one-and-half-hour talk on VLSI development in the industry with some emphasis on the semiconductor industry development in mainland China.

Other development on the day included a Master of Engineering Science student delivering his Work Completion Seminar via Skype from Shanghai, China.

There was a visit from a company exploring collaboration with UTAR/FEGT/EE programme on the same day. The engineers from the company met Mr. Tang Chong Ming at the end of the day for a brief discussion.

Mr Cheah Hun Wah from Oppstar Technology and his Managing Director Mr Ng Meng Thai met up with Dr. Soh to explore possible collaborations. The meeting was arranged by colleague Ir. Chan Cheong Loong.

CLVSI participation in the 1st Symposium in FEGT on 30 September – 3 October 2014

Members of the VLSI research centre contributed papers to the symposium and also participated in the Technical Programme Committee.

The symposium was successfully held for the first time in FEGT from 30th Septemher 2014 to 3rd October 2014 at Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology in UTAR Perak campus, Kampar
