  • World Diabetes Day Health Campaign
    4th November 2014

    This year, World Diabetes Day Health Campaign was held on the 4th of November 2014 at SJK Yu Hua, Kajang, with the collaboration between the Center for Research on Non Communicable Disease (CRNCD), FMHS, UTAR and the Malaysian Diabetes Educators Society.

    The event provided free health screening for the 25school teachers of SJK Yu Hua, Kajang who took part. Blood glucose, blood pressure and anthropometrywere taken and counseling were given to the school teachers as appropriate.

    The chosen event programme reflected this year‘s International Diabetes Federations theme: Healthy Living and Diabetes. Two short sessions talk on diabetes and healthy eating, given by both Ms Woo Li Fong and Ms Chew Wai Fong respectively.

    Activities for the students included: i) participating in "fun dance", which was demonstrated by four medical students and ii) 11 pupils took part in a quiz game. Small token were given to the students at the end of the game. iii) 26 pupils participated in the poster drawing competition with the theme on "Healthy Breakfast". Prizes in the form of book vouchers were awarded to ten outstanding posters.

    At the end of the session, the school headmaster presented a fruit basket to Ms Woo, the organizer and an apple was given to the pupils as a gesture of encouragement for them to lead healthy life.

    World Stroke Day 2014, 11 October 2014

    On World Stroke Day 2014, Centre for Research on Non-Communicable Diseases (CRNCD) of UTAR collaborated with Tung Shin Hospital (TSH) and UTAR Physiotherapy Department in conducting a half day workshop on 11 October 2014 for stroke patients form Tung Shin Hospital and their family members. There were a total of 60 participants for the workshop.

    The workshop started with the checking of blood pressure by students of Medical and Health Sciences Society (MHSS), UTAR. This was followed by several informative talks: \Stroke Prevention. by Prof Dr. Shelly Soo (CRNCD chairperson), \Stroke Management. by Dr. Ming (TSH physician) and \Dietary Advice. by Ms Grace Low (TSH dietitian) and Mr. Deveindran (UTAR physiotherapy lecturer). A physiotherapy student demonstrated post-stroke rehabilitative exercises for the stroke patients, who enthusiastically took part in the exercise.

    The workshop was successfully conducted and it was video recorded. It ended with exchange of token of appreciation between CRNCD and TSH.
