Description of Centre:

Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) was established at UTAR in March 2014. The Centre aims at promoting building of safe & secure societies in Malaysia by carrying out a holistic and proactive disaster risk reduction (DRR) research on both natural and man-made disasters of complex urban societies.

To conduct a holistic DRR study, CDRR functions as a multidisciplinary research centre of UTAR by attracting regular & associate members from multiple departments and faculties of UTAR such as LKC_FES (Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science), FAM (Faculty of Accountancy and Management), FBF(Faculty of Business and Finance), FEGT (Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology), FICT (Faculty of Information and Communication Technology), and FMHS (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences). Also external members collaborate with CDRR.

Research area:

CDRR conduct its research through a strategic DRR framework to integrate the efforts by multi-stakeholders, and its framework comprises of Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Risk Communication groups as shown in Fig. 1 below:

A Public Talk by Ir. Yee Thien Seng on "Some Geotechnical Problems on Slope Engineering" was co-organized successfully on at DK1 of FES campus.

Chairperson participated as one of panelists in the discussion session on "10 Years after the Indian Ocean Tsunami: A Retrospective" organised by IRP (International Reconstruction Platform) during World Reconstruction Conference 2 which was organised by World Bank at Washington D.C., USA.

Chairperson presented two technical talks "In situ approach in investigation of soil dynamic" and "Significant research on soil dynamic reflective on Malaysia scenarios" at Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM)

Chairperson visited University of Ottawa, Canada that has MoU with UTAR, and presented a technical talks "Global DRR Endeavour through UNWCDR- from Yokohama (1994) to Kobe (2005) and then to Sendai (2015) -" at Faculty of Civil Engineering in a session chaired by Prof. Murat Saatcioglu.

The 5th Kobe Univ. Global Link Forum was held at Plenary Theatre, KLCC, Kuala Lumpur on 5th&6th December.

Planning of UTAR - UST Workshop 2015 on Disaster Reduction and Management has started with Taiwan counterpart.

Extensive floods occurred in north-east part of Malaysia Peninsula and CDRR members have initiated preparing for possible reconnaissance and studies on the disaster.

MoU between B.K. Geosoil Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and CDRR is being prepared, and the signing ceremony is to take place in February, 2015.



UTAR R&D Colloquium (Presentations and Participations)

The 1st UTAR R&D Colloquium was held at Perak Campus on 31st May 2014. Three CDRR members (Dr. Lee Min Lee, Ms. Charlene Koo Chai Hoon, and Mr. Woon Kai Siong) and Chairperson have attended. A presentation by CDRR, ¯DRR Strategy and



Role of University. was given by the chairperson.

The 2nd UTAR R&D Colloquium was held at Kuala Lumpur Campus on 18th October 2014. Four CDRR members (Ir. Dr. Ooi Heong Beng, Dr. Lim Siong Kang, Mr. Woon Kai Siong, and chairperson) have attended. A presentation by CDRR,.Researches on Structures and their Safety. was given by Dr Lim Jee Hock.



The 5th Kobe Univ. Global Link Forum (Co-organisation)

The 5th Kobe Univ. Global Link Forum was held at Plenary Theatre, KLCC, Kuala Lumpur on 5th & 6th December 2014. CDRR members and chairperson have taken the initiative of preparing and organising the first day forum \Regional and Local Collaborations on DRR. from June. Collaborations among Malaysia & Indonesia universities (UKM, USM, and Syiah Kuala Univ. of Banda Aceh, Indonesia), and organisations related to DRR (United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Malaysia office, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Malaysia office, Mercy Malaysia, and Ampang Hospital) were established. Through such preparations, the Kobe Univ. delegate lead by Prof. Noriyuki Inoue, the vice president of Kobe Univ., has paid a visit to UTAR on 30th September 2014.

The discussion during this visit has lead to signing of MoU between UTAR and Kobe Univ. during the 5th Kobe Univ. Global Link Forum.



On 5th December, a one-day forum on "Regional and Local Collaborations on DRR" was successfully held, and more than 100 participants largely supported by UTAR have attended the forum. The vice chairperson, Dr. Wang Chan Chin, has moderated one of three sessions, and the chairperson, Prof. Dr. Yasuo Tanaka, has also participated in the session moderated by the vice chairperson. This two day forum & signing ceremony of MoU have been widely publicised in English and Chinese newspapers.
