1 | Seminar on Paediatric Orthopaedic Care 26 July 2019 The objective of the seminar is to provide knowledge, skill and clinical experience necessary to recognize and manage paediatric orthopaedic conditions. The seminar managed to attract around 86 UTAR medical students and staffs, particularly those who study/work on the field of paediatrics and orthopaedics. The seminar began with a welcome speech by Emeritus Prof Dr Boo Nem Yun followed by the introduction of guest speakers by Chairperson of Centre for Research on Non-Communicable Diseases Prof Dr John Paul Evangel Judson. The first speaker was Dr Douglas Pearman. During the talk, he shared the six trauma and orthopaedic cases he encountered in Malawi in the year 2018. According to him, the main cause of burns in Malawi was due to scalds. He explained the risk factors for burn contracture and burn management which includes initial management, care to avoid contractures and definitive surgical care. Before ending the talk, he advised the students and also shared the plans for his career in the future. The next speaker was FMHS Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Simerjit Singh. Delivering a talk on the topic“Nonaccidental Injuries in Children in Orthopaedic Aspects”, He began his talk by first sharing the history of child abuse. His talk focused on physical abuse which included Shaken Baby Syndrome and Munchausen Syndrome of Proxy. Some photos of Coining, Spooning and Cupping cultures among children in countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laotian were also shown. He then explained the measures need to be taken when one encounters physical abuse. He ended the talk by providing information on One-Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC). The seminar then resumed with another speaker, FMHS Clinical Professor Dr Swaminathan Manickam. He presented the topic “Pathological basis of some common paediatric orthopaedic conditions”. He explained the variations of musculoskeletal normality and the differential diagnosis. His talk also included information on Scoliosis. According to him, there are three types of Scoliosis, namely Idiopathic, Congenital and Secondary. He also provided more information on hypermobility, back pain due to mechanical causes, tumours that are either benign or malignant, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and congenital disorders of bone and cartilage. Next, Ms. Saraswathy Thangarajoo was invited to give a talk on “Nursing Care in Paediatrics Orthopaedics”. She discussed the nursing care for paediatric orthopaedic patients based on her own experiences. Following that, she showed a short video of a kid driving a manual toy car to the operation theatre which was intentionally done to divert the kid’s mind and help him deal with the anxiety of separating from his parents. She ended the talk by expressing her hope to see a similar implementation done in Malaysia. The last speaker for the day was FMHS lecturer Gan Quan Fu. He delivered a talk titled, “Paediatrics Orthopaedics Rehabilitation”. During the talk, he explained the different types of paediatrics orthopaedic cases, the importance of addressing paediatrics orthopaedic cases and the role of the physiotherapist in handling paediatrics orthopaedic cases. He also elucidated on the treatment environment, clinical examination and the concepts to consider when selecting the choice of intervention. Total number of registered participants: 86 |

2 | Wellness Seminar and Workshop 30 November 2019 The Centre of Non-Communicable Diseases (CRNCD) organised a whole day Wellness Seminar titled ‘Health Across the Ages’ at KAG-01, Sungai Long Campus on 30 November, 2019 (Saturday) from 8 am to 5 pm. This seminar was open to the public, UTAR staff, health professionals and students. The objectives of the event were 1) To create awareness on about health amongst UTAR and Sungai Long communities and 2) to provide general knowledge on men’s health at all stages of life amongst UTAR and Sungai Long communities. The speakers for the seminar were Dr.Mohd Azri bin Zainal Abidin (UPM), Assoc. Prof.Dr. Mohamad Shariff bin A Hamid (UM), Assoc. Prof.Dr.Shanggar A/L Kuppusamy (UMSC), and Professor. Dr. Tan Maw Pin (UM). The event highlighted important health considerations in the paediatric age group through the topic ‘Prevention and management of allergies in children’ delivered by Dr.Mohd Azri bin Zainal Abidin. Adult health was emphasised through two topics namely, ‘Is it safe for me to exercise?’ by Assoc. Prof.Dr. Mohamad Shariff and, ‘Management of erectile dysfunction’ by Assoc. Prof.Dr.Shanggar A/L Kuppusamy (UMSC). Geriatric issues were addressed by Professor. Dr. Tan Maw Pin (UM) who spoke about ‘Social participation and health in older adults’. In addition, two workshops were held in the post-lunch session which served as a platform for the participants to gain knowledge on topics such as Erectile Dysfunction and Prevention of Sports Injuries. The facilitators of the workshops were Mr. Tarun Amalnerkar (UTAR), Assistant Prof.Dr.Ilayaraja (UTAR) and Mr. Noh Zulfikri (UTAR). The workshops ended at 5:10 pm.

3 | CRNCD Annual Dinner 30 November 2019 The annual dinner of CRNCD took place at Malikas Restaurant, Bukit Jalil. The objective of the event was to foster the relationship between members of the center. 22 members attended the event together with their spouse/family members. Buffet dinner which includes unique Indian cuisine was served by the restaurant. Dr Nadia Mohd Hatta was the emcee of the night. Prof Judson was invited to deliver a welcome address before the dinner began. He mentioned that this get-together party was organized to celebrate the year-end festive season and also served as a gathering session for all the members after a year of hard works. He also hoped that a cruise trip could be organized next year as one of the center’s annual event. The dinner began at around 7.45pm following the speech. A few mini games were organized during the dinner. The first game was ‘Do you know your friends well?’. Gales of laughter were created during the game when the participants were being asked randomly about their friends’ favourites. The second game was ‘Fashion show’ in which a participant had to design ‘clothes’ for his partner with toilet rolls. The participants even had to perform a cat walk at the end of the game! Lastly, a group photo was taken before the dinner ended at around 9.30pm. Programme:
