To be a leading research centre in innovative railway technology to support sustainable transportation with care for our community and environment.

Mission:
We are committed to achieving the following,
1. Promoting excellent research and development on railway infrastructure and engineering.
2. Providing engineering solutions to enhance the growth of railway industry.
3. Supporting the community on social, economic and environmental issues.
Objectives: 1. Conduct interdisciplinary research in railway infrastructure, traction power, transport, signal control, railway structure design, maintenance and condition monitoring, railway asset management, socio-economics issues, materials for vibration/noise control, and sustainable energy and environmental issues.
2. To collaborate with local and overseas institutions to promote the above research activities and services; and
3. To conduct short courses and training in relevant subjects and to contribute to accredited formal courses related to railway engineering.
Research area: I. Promote interdisciplinary research in railway infrastructure, engineering and socio-economics;
II. Railway engineering related courses and services.

Colas Rail started its operation in Malaysia in 2011 with its first contact to build the extension of KL LRT Putra Line. Since then it has set up its SE Asia division in Malaysia. The company has expertise in system engineering and construction infrastructures, power supply, signaling, telecommunication, maintenance of railway networks (HSR) and full system integration. The parent company is headquartered in France with a workforce of over 5800 employees and turnover on Euro947 million. In SE Asia they have offices in Vietnam and Singapore.

Outcomes of the meeting:
1. Interesting to established formal collaboration with UTAR. Their current connection with UTAR is through PESTAC.
2. To provide internship placements for our students.
3. To participate in career talk to our final students.
4. To set up collaborative projects, initially through final year student projects.
5. To discuss future research collaboration projects.
6. To provide facility for industrial visit.
7. To know if we have a website for them to advertise their job vacancies in our website.
8. To conduct joint professional courses to rail professionals.

3Big Data Opportunities: System monitoring and personalized health management

Presentation by Prof Tsui Kwok Leung, City University of Hong Kong, 21 June 2019, KB517

Prof Tsui is leading the School Data Science at The City University of Hongkong. He has extensive experience in statically mathematics and had worked in USA before returning to Hong Kong
His presentation is about how big data is necessary to for process monitoring, prognostics and health monitoring. He also emphasized that appropriate sensors are essential to measure the state of machine/human health condition. He gave several case studies in his presentation. The presentation ended with an active discussion and exchange of ideas.

4Future Event: 2nd Symposium of Railway Infrastructure and Engineering

Theme: Transformation of Railway Connectivity, Date : 3-4 August 2020 Venue : Sungai Long Golf and Country Club, Jalan Sungai Long, Cheras, Kajang

Connectivity provided by rail transport will have significance impact to our social and economic lives. With the revival of the nation’s rail projects will undoubtedly propel our nation to the next stage of development and opportunity is not only limited to Malaysia but also in the region. This symposium is aimed at bringing together practitioners from railway industry, owner, operator, researcher and academia to share and promote research activities to support the new initiatives of expanding the rail network in Malaysia and promoting railway connectivity within the ASEAN region. It will provide a forum for exchange of ideas and opportunities to network with researchers, universities, practitioners and owners in the following areas:

2. Safety and standards
3. Operation safety, reliability and maintainability
4. Social, environmental and economic issues
5. Education and training
