The 7th PAAU was held from 19-25 October 2019 in Penang & Kuala Lumpur. It has included 90 over participants from seven universities in Asia:

  • TungHai University, TaiChung
  • Silpakorn University, Bangkok
  • KamlaRahejaVidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai

The 7PAAU was jointly organized with Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) and Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) from the Northern Chapters. The theme, “Inclusive Urbanisms? The George Town experience” was chosen to reflect pressing issues faced by GEORGE TOWN, which shares similar fate with many other cities in Asia. The workshop brought together local practitioners and international experts for a multi-cultural comparative exchange. The workshop included technical lectures by Dr. Ang Ming Chee (GeorgeTown World Heritage Incorporate); Prof. Yushi Utaka (Hyogo University); Dr. Matt Benson (Think City) and Mr. Clement Liang (Penang Heritage Trust). Participants visited several projects and were given on-site lectures by the local experts. The participants were divided into 4 groups, each working on different themes, led by members of PAM and MIP and assisted by staff from the participating universities. The group proposals were presented on the last day of the workshop:-
  • Theme A: Penang Clan Jetties: the seafront pioneers
  • Theme B: Chromosomes of historic-cultural enclave
  • Theme C: Timescaping the city: discovery of hidden gems in George Town
  • Theme D: Dilemma of Shop-house
