Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction

Centre Name:

Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR)
Chairperson:Ir. Dr. Huang Yuk Feng
Description of Centre:Center for DRR was established in 2014 at UTAR as a multidisciplinary research centre to bring out integral DRR research outcomes from various faculties & organizations to society. Scientific & technological study on Risk Assessment, social & scientific study of Risk Management, and human & technological study of Risk Communication form the central pillars of our research.
Research area: Our current research areas focus on topics as proposed by the available expertise and resources based on the current Malaysian societal challenges and global impact factors. This bottom up approach can spurred the academicscreativities as the researchers have free hand to exploit ideas and interests based on their professional know how. However, we will continuously monitoring the national and global activities to make sure we deliver to what the Malaysian society needs in the future. We have to maintain comprehensive integration and implementation of the DRR from community level to global level, by using a DRR framework of Risk Assessment, Risk Management and Risk Communication.

This event is organised by DCI, ICE Student Chapter and CDRR. The invited speaker was Ir. Dr Julian Lee who graduated with BEng (Hon) Civil and Structural Engineering in 1998 and obtained his MSc in 2003 and D.Eng in 2017. He is currently the Chief Executive and Founder of Cinnotek International Group, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore. He is serving the Civil Engineering Society as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. Ir. Dr Lee has taken significant roles as Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineer on different kinds of construction projects in Hong Kong and worldwide. Ir. Dr Lee is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineer (MICE), UK and a Member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (MHKIE), Hong Kong.

On 09th August 2019, participants gathered at the UTAR Sungai Long Campus, KB208, Lecture Hall around 2:00 pm for registration. 2An Introduction to Prestressed Concrete Bridges
Date: 20-11-2019
Venue: KB316, UTAR Sungai Long Campus

Ir. Chong Yew Khee is a member of IEM and a registered PE with practicing certificate to BEM. After his postgraduate study, he was working as site supervision and design engineer in several structural engineering consultant firms. Currently he is the director for C&O Technic Lead Sdn. Bhd. He is also co-founder of C&O Technic Lead Sdn. Bhd.

The talk was started with some types of bridges introduction. He explained every single type of bridges with different features to students. Besides, he also introduced the types of bridges which are commonly used in Malaysia and some of the examples of bridges which are used in other countries. Some of the drawings of bridges and analysis were shown during the talk as well. Before he continued with his talk regarding the bridge design, a question and answer section was conducted to ensure the students understood the basic concept of bridges. The talk was then continued with bridge design. Some of the guide, standard, codes, calculations involved as well as the cross-sectional pictures of bridges were shown during the talk. Ir Chong ended his talk with a recap of lessons learned. He summarized the talk with some examples of bridges and the number of workers death as well as the number of workers injured.

After the informative presentation, the talk was proceeded with a Question and Answer section. Throughout the talk, students were able to have a deep understanding of some fundamentals of prestressed concrete bridges. Study notes were also handed out to everyone who attended the talk so that they would not miss a thing. The token of appreciation was handed over to Ir. Chong by Dr. Chong Siaw Yah who was the Lecturer-in-charge of the talk.

Outcome
The talk lasted for 2 hours on the 20th of November 2019 and it was really an honor to have Ir. Chong conducting a talk that is in within his specialization. After participating in the talk, the students are now able to have the fundamental knowledge of prestressed concrete bridges which would be beneficial for them in working field.

Conclusion
The talk has certainly helped the students in achieving their purpose of getting a deeper insight into prestressed concrete bridges. This would not be possible without the works of the expert himself, Ir. Chong Yew Khee and his contribution is deeply appreciated. Students were able to acknowledge the importance of the prestressed concrete bridge and its wide functionality. Without a doubt, the sole objective of the talk has been achieved.
