Colorectal Cancer Awareness Seminar

The UTAR Centre for Cancer Research (CCR) organised the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Seminar on 31 March 2016 at the Multi-purpose Hall in Sungai Long Campus.

 The seminar aimed to create public awareness about colorectal cancer and to promote an understanding of healthy lifestyles in accordance with the CCR’s commitment to educating the public on the importance of screening and prevention.

 The seminar’s chairperson, Sheela Devi in her opening speech said that World Cancer Day is a chance to make a change. There is much to be done to eradicate colorectal cancer and we must first understand that early detection can save lives. She also said that UTAR CCR has always shown support in order to bestow awareness of cancer and its prevention strategies.

 “Awareness is very important. In UTAR we not only encourage staff and students to do research in cancer, but also to go out and get involved with society to heighten awareness,” said UTAR Vice-President R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei in his speech. He also said that medical expenses can be reduced if society learns to lead a healthy lifestyle.

“By coming to this seminar, we have learnt how to give correct information to the patients and society,” said Aisyah, a nurse from the National Cancer Institute. Her colleague Haslina added that they learned from the seminar new techniques to handle patients in certain cases and that the talks really helped them in their line of work.

 During the seminar, Prof Lee presented a cheque worth RM1,048 by UTAR CCR to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. The donation came from 50 percent of the proceeds from sales of cancer support ribbons. The participants in the seminar came from the National Cancer Institute, Tung Shin Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Sungai Long Medical Center, and UCSI University, besides those from UTAR and the public.

Community Health Talk
UTAR Sg Long
The centre has a long-term collaboration with Centre for Extension Education (CEE) to conduct talks on cancer for the Sungai Long community including UTAR staffs and students. This year, the focus was on stomach cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and cervical cancer. The aim of these talks are to increase awareness of the diseases by highlighting the importance of cancer prevention through vaccination, healthy lifestyle as well as early detection through health screening. In addition, useful information about the causes and symptoms of the cancers, and the treatment options were delivered during the talks.

Meeting on Research Collaboration with National Cancer Institute (NCI)
10th March, NCI, Putrajaya

On June 2015, CCR has organised a visit to NCI to network with the researchers in NCI and identify possible research resources available at NCI. Following the visit, several potential research projects were identified.

This year, on 10th March, a meeting was set up between researchers at CCR and National Cancer Institute (NCI) to further discuss on the projects. Following the meeting, both parties had agreed to collaborate on the following research projects and had identified the lead/liaising persons as follow:

 1)    Pharmacoeconomics and Quality of Life different chemotherapy regimen in lung cancer patient (A/P Dr Thaw, CCR & Dr Wong, NCI)

2)    Effectiveness of cancer therapy on pain and functional ability in breast cancer patients (Ms Manisha/Ms Reshma, CCR & Pn Farha, NCI)

The project leaders from CCR are to prepare the proposal and submit to NCI for final confirmation before registering with National Medical Research Registry (NMRR) for ethical clearance by Medical Research Ethical Committee, NIH for subsequent research activities. 

Medical Camp
17th September, Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil, Kajang

The Pertubuhan Kesedaran Wanita Negeri Selangor organised a free medical camp as part of an annual service project. This medical camp is mainly targeted for single and poor socio economic mothers and is aimed at providing women with a routine health examination such as blood pressure monitoring, diabetic screening, vision test and added with certain women screening namely, pap smear and mammogram services. Breast examination and mammogram was organized with MAKNA.

 

he team from CCR (FMHS), lead by Ms. Sheela Devi from Department of Nursing, Mr. Sathish Kumar and Mr. Avnianban from Department of Physiotherapy conducted the following screening: blood pressure, blood glucose and vision test. It was indeed a good experience and through this programme, it provided the staff with opportunities to become active in the community and positive contributors to society.
