CONSULTANCY & COMMERCIALISATION REPORT

This report presents the consultancy and commercialisation statistics and activities for the year 2016.

In 2016, the total amount approved is RM1,386,398.12 as shown in Figure 1. This is a decrease of RM147,000.00 compared to 2015. The total number of approved consultancy works approved in 2016 is 426 as compared to 312 in 2015.

Figure 2 shows the percentage share of consultancy/outside works by faculty. Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) has the largest share at 32.7% of the total approved amount in 2016. This is followed by Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) at 14.4% and Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) at 12.2%.

Figure 3 shows the percentage value of approved projects by categories. Training/Workshop constitutes 48% of all approved projects. This is followed by Consultancy which forms 39% of all approved projects.

Patents
UTAR has as at 31 December 2016 submitted 18 inventions for patent application at the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office (MyIPO). In 2016, 4 patent applications were granted patent protection. Figure 4 shows the number of patents filed and granted for the period 2008 to 2016. The current status for the 18 inventions is given in Table 1.

Industrial Collaboration

UTAR has successfully worked together with Suzhou Galaxy Camphol, GLX Malaysia Sdn Bhd, SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd, ARM and Synopsys in producing the first multi-processor system-on-a-chip in Malaysia. The Rahman University Multi-Processor System (RUMPS401) consists of 4 ARM Cortex M0 processor systems in a single silicon chip, communicating and working together via a UTAR proprietary Adaptive Network-on-a-Chip (NoC). The Department of Consultancy and Commercialisation (DCC) organised two University-Industry forums in July and December 2016 in collaboration with The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Selangor and Perak at UTAR Sungai Long Campus and UTAR Kampar Campus respectively. The objective was to promote networking and collaboration between the university and the industry.

Prospect for the Year 2017

To further perpetuate consultancy and R&D collaborations with the industry, DCC will continue to organise the university-industry forums in 2017. DCC and LKC FES will conduct quarterly events with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (KLSCCCI) to further enhance UTAR's collaboration with the SME/SMI. DCC will also work with the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) to promote new village student entrepreneurship.
