CCIS Talk: Artificial Intelligence Usage in Retail Finance by Cheemun Foong |
---|
Date: 24 February 2016 (Wednesday) Time: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm Venue: KB316, UTAR Sungai Long Campus, Bandar Sungai Long, Selangor. Title: Artificial Intelligence Usage in Retail Finance Abstract: The subject of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been rigorously researched and hyped since the dawn of computing. However, its practical usage has been lacking for a few decades. For the last 10 years, the rise of cloud computing and the ubiquity of personal behavioral data breathed new life for AI applications. This presentation started with a general historical narrative of AI development and AI's current state. The second part of the presentation talked about how AI is being used in Moneylion and also several other Financial Tech companies. Finally, the dark premonitions of AI were discussed by several technology greats. Speaker: Foong Cheemun, Co-founder and CTO, Moneylion |

CCIS Talk: Image Retrieval using Deep Learning Techniques by Hsueh-Ming Hang |
---|
Title: Image Retrieval using Deep Learning Techniques Date: 12 August 2016 (Friday) Time: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm Venue: N007, UTAR Kampar Campus, Perak Speaker: Prof. Dr. Hsueh-Ming Hang, NCTU Abstract: Due to the rapid growth of image number, the content-based image retrieval for a large database becomes an essential tool in image processing. Although there are many published studies on this topic, it is still a challenge to do an advanced search, for example, retrieving a specific building using a view different from the photographing angles in the database. In addition, if the user can provide additional images for query, how do we combine the information provided by these multiple queries? In this study, we tested two different types of image features designed for retrieval purpose. We adopted the Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) feature as the low-level feature and the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) feature as the high-level feature. Several levels of data fusion schemes are proposed. The first one is combining the features of the 6th layer features and the 7th layer features derived from CNN. The second one is combining the information provided by the SIFT features and the CNN features. The third one is combining the information provided by multiple queries. When appropriate, we tried both early fusion concept and the late fusion concept. Our best proposed scheme can exceed most of the state-of-the-art retrieval methods for a single query. And the multi-query retrieval can further increase the retrieval accuracy. |
CCIS Talk: Globalization of Engineering Education: Our Experiences by Hsueh-Ming Hang |
---|
Title: Globalization of Engineering Education: Our Experiences Date: 12th August 2016 (Friday) Time: 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm Venue: N107, UTAR Kampar Campus, Perak Speaker: Prof. Dr. Hsueh-Ming Hang, NCTU Abstract: Modern engineering training must be international. There are several aspects in this statement. First, the modern engineering knowledge, skills and disciplines are universal. Second, the world is flat. The industry and market are facing global competition so are the engineers who are the key element of industry. Third, international collaborations in science and technology inspire innovation. Forth, international explore experiences enhance the mobility of students and faculty members. Therefore, the top universities have international partnership, overseas branch campus, and exchange student/faculty programs. In this talk, the speaker started with the statistics of the international students and scholars enrollment in USA. Then, the speaker described the international experiences of the Electrical and Computer Engineering College at NCTU. He also covered the exchange student and dual degree programs, the international graduate student degree program, the entrepreneurship program, massive open online course, and professional society participation. The talk was a two-way communication with exchange of globalisation concepts and experiences with the audience. The goal of the workshop was "Educating Engineers as Global Citizens". |
