CAP Seminar 2016 was held on 15 January 2016 (Friday) from 9am to 5.30pm at P005, UTAR Kampar campus. The seminar was chaired by Assoc. Prof Dr Siah Poh Chua, the Head of Master of Psychology Programme. Recent studies were presented by CAP members. The idea behind having such seminar was to have a well learned gathering of research members in UTAR, who could discuss and deliberate the possible research collaboration in the future. Presenters and participants believed that the seminar had provided ample scope for intellectual interaction and research collaborations.

Participation in the seminar:
The CAP Seminar 2016 was attended by 23 CAP members and FAS staff. A total of 11 research papers were presented by CAP members. Below are some photographs taken during the event:-



No Apologies Workshop

Perak Elevate Life Society (PELS) together with Centre for Applied Psychology (CAP) jointly organized a workshop entitled “No Apologies” on 13th August 2016 at UTAR, Kampar Campus. It was a full-day workshop starting from 9am till 6pm with the aim of spreading awareness of having healthy relationships and it also touched on the topics of love, life and sex.

The workshop was divided into four main sessions including “Who Am I”, ‘Healthy Relationships”, “Boundaries and Choices” and lastly “The Media and You”. Two trainers from a non-profit organization known as “Focus on the Family” have conducted the sessions alternatively. It was an interactive workshop with fun-filled games and discussions. Students were inspired with useful information provided by the trainers.
They had great time learning, participating and making friends. Moreover, students also felt that all the four sessions were informative, relevant and at the same time contribute to their personal development. Overall, the event was a success as we received many positive comments and feedbacks from the participants.

Participation in the Workshop:

Nearly 60 UTAR students participated in this workshop along with two UTAR CAP Members and 3 PELS members. Attendees were charged a fee of RM50 which included the workshop materials, goodie bag and refreshment.

A Community Based Approach for Suicide Prevention: Hong Kong Experience
Speaker: Prof. Yip Siu Fai (University of Hong Kong)

Prof. Yip from the University of Hong Kong gave a talk on his research in suicide prevention. He provided insights on the community based approach in executing suicide prevention plans in Hong Kong nation.

Prof. Yip presented his research papers regarding suicide prevention effort in Hong Kong. He also shared matters and actions related to suicide prevention in the South East Asia. According to him, the trend shows that suicides are on the rise. Data shows that the number of suicide case is overwhelming and it was speculated that the number would be on the spike in the near future.

Audiences and academic staff had the opportunity to have a dialogue session with Prof. Yip. The response for the talk was encouraging and audiences gained fruitful insights on suicide prevention matters. The talk ended at 4 pm.

Move On” Book Launching Ceremony

The “Move On” book launching ceremony was successfully held on 25 August 2016 at P107, Block P in UTAR, Kampar Campus. Eight authors (six teaching staff (Assoc. Prof Dr Siah Poh Chua, the of Head of Master of Psychology Programme, Assoc. Prof Dr Kok Jin Kuan, Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes, lecturers - William Hoi Wei Yuan, Ang Siew Mun, Cheng Siew May and Tan Swee Mee), one post-graduate student (Loh Hui Qian)and one retired staff (Dr Lee Mah Ngee) from the Faculty of Arts & Social Science, UTAR (Kampar Campus) have published a book entitled “Move On”.

The book consists of short stories, life experiences and articles which are especially targeted for our young readers (adolescents). The aim of this book launching ceremony was to promote and share some of the authors’ knowledge and experiences to the readers. The news on book launching ceremony had been published in two media; there are The Star and Sin Chew Daily.

The special guest for the launching ceremony was the chairperson Centre for Applied Psychology, Dr Tan Chee Seng. The book launching ceremony ended with an autograph session.

Journal Club Series: August 2016

‘Journal Club Series: August 2016’ was organized by the Center of Applied Psychology with the purpose of providing a platform for knowledge sharing on Qualitative research method.

The academic event was conducted in the form of sharing session where Ms. Hor Gaik Lan, a current postgraduate student pursuing Master of Philosophy, presented a paper on coding qualitative study. The title of the paper is “Gendered Portraits of Depression in Swedish Newspapers’.

The presentation was followed by a sharing session where participants, undergraduates in particular voiced their opinions and doubts on qualitative research method. Ms. Hor took the mantle as the mentor during the session.

Some of the beneficial tips shared by Ms. Hor were matters regarding data collection for qualitative research method. She shared the tips to invite research participants to give more information during an interview.

The room was filled with genuine interest in academia especially in qualitative research method and the session ended at 4.00pm.

What Examiners Look For In a Thesis (And During a Viva Voce)?

The Center of Applied Psychology was honoured to have Assoc. Prof. Dr. Intan Hashimah Mohd Hashim in the house to shed lights on “What Examiners Look for in a Thesis and During a Viva Voce”.

The academic from the Universiti Sains Malaysia gave an exclusive overview in terms of the process a postgraduate student would go through after the submission of the thesis. She had also elaborated the usual procedure in thesis submission, tips on Viva Voce preparation, performance issues in Viva Voce, the flow of Viva Voce and elements to take note during a Viva Voce.

Participants of the talk had an ample exposure to Viva Voce through the fruitful sharing by Dr Intan fueled by her vast experience in being an examiner for postgraduate thesis. The event ended at 4.00pm preceded by a Q and A session with Dr Intan.
