TEI (Technology-Enriched Instruction) workshop - Conducted on 28 Feb 2015 – 1 Mar 2015, UTAR Perak Campus, Perak, Malaysia
The workshop was conducted by the team comprising of Dr Mahmud Abd Wahab, Dr Cheah Phaik Kin, Mr Chong Chee Keong and Mr Lee Chee Heong. The workshop was conducted with the following objectives:

  • To build a pool of UTAR CLT trainers to subsequently conduct workshops on 21 CLD and TEI to secondary schools and residential schools.
  • To conduct research on the participants of the workshop, e.g. regarding improvements to their teaching practices and their ICT competency.
  • 11 members attended the workshop


“Massive Open Online Resources for Researchers” talk - Conducted on 25 August 2015, UTAR Perak Campus, Perak, Malaysia
The talk was conducted by Mr Chong Chee Keong and Mr Lee Chee Heong as part of the Research Project on “Enhancement of Reflective Practice With The Help of Microsoft OneNote”. 32 UTAR lecturers attended the talk, held at Lecture Theatre H120.

“Symposium on Science Education” – Held on 5 September 2015, UTAR Sungai Long Campus, Selangor, Malaysia
The Symposium on Science Education (SoSE) 2015 was organized on 5th September 2015, through the collaborative efforts of UTAR Centre for Learning and Teaching, the Division of Programme Promotion and the Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research. It is supported by Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia and sponsored by KLESF, Majlis Professor Negara, the Toray Group (Malaysia), SASBADI and GTI Media.

The participants comprised of 200 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teachers, educators and stakeholders from national schools, private and international schools as well as higher learning institutions.

The themed was “Broadening the Horizon of Innovation in Science and Mathematics Education”. It aimed to share innovative and effective teaching methods in STEM education, create awareness on the current innovative teaching methods of STEM subjects and provide networking opportunities for STEM educators from various schools, colleges and universities.

Professor Dr Ewe Hong Tat, the UTAR Vice President (Internationalisation and Academic Development) gave his welcoming speech. The Keynote address was delivered by YBhg Dato’ Sri Haji Khairil bin Haji Awang, Timbalan Ketua Pengarah Pendidikan Malaysia, Dasar dan Pembangunan Pendidikan, Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia. The Invited Talk was delivered by Professor Dato’ Dr Noraini binti Idris, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. Prof Dato Dr Noraini represented the Ketua Kluster Pendidikan dan Pembangunan Modal Insan, Majlis Professor Negara.

The other speakers were the award winners of Anugerah Akademik Negara, the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) Science Education and Guru Cemerlang Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM), next shared their thoughts and ideas on innovative and effective teaching methods for STEM subjects. The speakers were Mr Lim Chee Leong, Dr Tan Ming Tang, En. Mohd. Yazid Bin Mohd. Shariff and Mr Ching Lee Hock. There was also a hands-on workshop conducted by Ms Teoh Poh Yew, on developing high-order thinking skills and methods to motivate young learners to take interest in STEM subjects. The Symposium ends with a presentation by Tengku Hazrul Tengku Haizar on ways to have fun learning in classrooms.

“21 CLD and TEI” – Teacher Development talk - Conducted on 5 October 2015, at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Kwang Hua, Klang, Selangor, Malaysia
UTAR CLT’s members, Ms Winnie Er Pek Hoon and Mr Chong Chee Keong visited the Kwang Hua Chinese Secondary School to conduct a talk for 77 teachers of the school. Also, we took the opportunity to conduct our research on “Awareness of Open Educational Resources: A Malaysian Case”. After the talk, CLT had a post-talk briefing with the Principal, Mr Law Choon Lee, and a photo-session where the UNESCO resources were presented to the Principal.

“From OERs to MOOCs” – Faculty Development talk - Conducted on 20 October 2015, at UTAR Perak Campus, Perak, Malaysia
The talk was conducted by the team comprising Mr Chong Chee Keong, Mr Lee Chee Heong and Dr Mahmud Wahab as part of the Research Project on “Awareness of Open Educational Resources: A Malaysian Case”. It also introduced UTAR lecturers to Open Educational Resources and Massive Open Online Courses. 30 UTAR lecturers attended the talk, held at Lecture Theatre H122.

“Integrating ICT and 21 CLD into Education through UNESCO Resources” – Trainers Development talk - Conducted on 21 October 2015, at Akademi Laut Malaysia (Malaysian Maritime Academy), Melaka, Malaysia
DThis talk was conducted by the team comprising of Ms Winnie Er Pek Hoon, Dr Cheah Phaik Kin and Dr Priscilla Moses as a part of the Research Project on Evaluation of the Training Needs of the Trainers of Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) or Malaysian Maritime Academy.

52 trainers of ALAM attended the talk. A few of them gave feedbacks that the talk was an eye-opener for them, informative and they wish to implement in their instructions. UNESCO resources were distributed to some trainers. It was later announced by ALAM that they would burn the whole set of CDs to be compiled and kept in their library.

CLT participation in the UNESCO Regional Seminar of the Resource Distribution and Training Centres (RDTC) 2015
The Centre for Learning and Teaching is a Resource Distribution and Training Centre (RDTC) of UNESCO Bangkok. CLT attended the UNESCO Regional Seminar for RDTC 2015, from 11th to 13th November 2015, in South China Normal University, Guangzhou, China.

The CLT delegation comprised of Mr Lee Chee Heong (CFS-PK), Ms Winnie Er (CLT Chairperson), Mr Chong Chee Keong (FBF) and Dr Mahmud Wahab (Deputy Dean, R&D and Postgraduate Programme, FBF). Two days before the seminar, on 9th November, CLT delegation met up with the Organising Chairperson, Professor Dr Andrew Zhao Jianhua, the Deputy Dean of School of Information Technology, South China Normal University (SCNU).

The main theme of the UNESCO Regional Seminar 2015 was “Teacher Training to Promote Safe, Effective and Responsible Use of ICT (SERUICT)”, with 3 sub-themes:
    i. Teacher Training for Media and Information Literacy (MIL)
    ii. Open Educational Resources (OERs) to Enhance Teaching and Learning
    iii. Teachers’ Professional Learning Community to Foster Collaborative Teaching and Peer Coaching.
CLT presented two research papers titled “Awareness of Safe, Effective and Responsible Use of ICT” (SERU ICT) and “Awareness of Open Educational Resources” (OER). CLT also conducted a poster presentation on its activities as a UNESCO RDTC for the year 2014 to2015. Five units of UTAR 10th anniversary commemorative books, which were contributed by UTAR’s DCCPR, were presented to South China Normal University, UNESCO Bangkok and Chiang Mai University, as a mark of collaboration. UNESCO Bangkok was represented by Ms Park Jonghwi (Programme Specialist in ICT), while Chiang Mai University was represented by Mr Hartfried Schmid.

The delegates, which comprised of 24 RDTCs from 12 countries in Asia-Pacific, were taken on a study visit to the Shenzhen Nanshan District School in Shenzhen, China, to see how English lessons were delivered in a China primary school. The delegates then visited the “Future Classroom”, a smart classroom project run by the Future Education Group Inc.

UNESCO also launched two new Directory of Free Educational Resources for Teachers, for Science and Classroom Productivity. These would be made available in the first quarter of 2016. The video on the RDTC Regional Seminar 2015 and all presentation slides can be viewed at:
