Launch of Research Project for Perak Chinese Tin Mining Industry (19th-20th Century) 19-20世纪霹雳州华人锡矿业研究计划推展礼
A research project on the Perak Chinese tin mining industry between the 19th to 20th century was launched at Grand Kampar Hotel, Kampar on 4 March 2015. The two-year UTAR Centre for Chinese Studies Research (CCSR) project, titled ‘Research Project for Perak Chinese Tin Mining Industry (19th – 20th Century)’ is supported by the Perak Chinese Mining Association and will connect the dots between Perak’s tin mining industry and history of the Chinese immigration to Malaya as well as the development of townships in Malaya between the 19th to 20th century. Invited to launch the significant research project was Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun. Also present were UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Perak Chinese Mining Association Advisor Tan Sri Hew See Tong, Perak Chinese Mining Association President Dato’ Chin Lean Choong, and Perak Chinese Mining Association Secretary-General Teoh Beng Suang. The event reached its highlight when Datin Paduka Chew, accompanied by the VIPs, was invited to strike the gong thrice to mark the official launch of the research project.

A research project on the Perak Chinese tin mining industry between the 19th to 20th century was launched at Grand Kampar Hotel, Kampar on 4 March 2015.

Tin Mining Festival 2015 2015年锡矿节
For the first time, Perakians from every walk of life had the opportunity to revisit the heyday of the tin mining industry in Kinta Valley during the inaugural Tin Mining Festival 2015 held at the Kinta Tin Mining (Gravel Pump) Museum, Bandar Baru Kampar on 25 October 2015. A joint effort by UTAR Centre for Chinese Studies Research (CCSR) Chinese Malaysian and Cultural Studies Unit, the Perak Chinese Mining Association and the Kampar Tin Mining (Gravel Pump) Museum, the Tin Mining Festival 2015’s objectives were to enhance the younger generation’s knowledge of the country’s rich tin mining history as well as to commemorate the contribution of forerunners of the early tin mining industry. Invited to officiate the event was Second Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan. Also present at the event were Perak Chinese Mining Association Advisor Tan Sri Hew See Tong, Perak Chinese Mining Association President Dato’ Chin Lean Choong, All-Malaya Chinese Mining Association Choong Tien Chuan, UTAR Council Member Hew Fen Yee, Dean of UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Chairperson of UTAR CCSR-cum-Organising Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Wong Wun Bin. A highlight of Tin Mining Festival 2015 was the launch of Tan Sri Hew’s book titled “The Glittering History of Gravel Pump Mining Industry” (《锡日辉煌砂泵采矿工业的历程终结》), which was also proofread by UTAR CCSR. According to Tan Sri Hew, the book illustrates the history of the tin mining industry with focus on the Kinta Valley. A highlight of Tin Mining Festival 2015 was the launch of Tan Sri Hew’s book titled “The Glittering History of Gravel Pump Mining Industry” (《锡日辉煌砂泵采矿工业的历程终结》), which was also proofread by UTAR CCSR. According to Tan Sri Hew, the book illustrates the history of the tin mining industry with focus on the Kinta Valley.

International Conference on Min Nan Culture, UTAR 2015 2015年拉曼大学闽南文化国际学术研讨会
The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) and the Centre for Chinese Studies Research, Min-nan Cultural Studies Unit jointly hosted the “International Conference on Min-nan Culture” (拉曼大学闽南文化国际学术研讨会) at Sungai Long Campus on 6 and 7 November 2015 to promote Min-nan cultural studies on an intervarsity and international platform. The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) and the Centre for Chinese Studies Research, Min-nan Cultural Studies Unit jointly hosted the “International Conference on Min-nan Culture” (拉曼大学闽南文化国际学术研讨会) at Sungai Long Campus on 6 and 7 November 2015 to promote Min-nan cultural studies on an intervarsity and international platform.

Topics discussed at the International Conference on Min-nan Culture include Min-nan beliefs, notable Min-nan figures, Min-nan traditions and customs, Min-nan literature and the language, Min-nan associations, and more. Malay-Chinese Indian Intellectual Seminar based on Research on Manuscripts and Inscription Stone before 1500CE 十五世纪前马来-中国-印度学术交流史”学术研讨会
Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Sinology Unit hosted a “Seminar Intelektual Melayu-Cina-India Berdasarkan Kajian Manuskrip dan Batu Bersurat Sebelum 1500 Masihi (Malay-Chinese-Indian Intellectual Seminar based on research on Manuscripts and Inscription Stone before 1500CE)” on 1 December 2015. Present at the opening ceremony were Deputy Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development YB Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, UTAR Vice President for R&D and Commercialisation Ir Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei, ICS Dean Dr Chong Siou Wei, and Organising Committee Chairperson Dr Tee Boon Chuan. Aimed to promote interests in Malay-Chinese-Indian history, this seminar set on examining Malay manuscripts from before 1500CE, particularly those archived in China and India. Additionally, the seminar also envisioned to function as a platform for scholars to discuss tacit knowledge about civilisation from the manuscripts, and to further understand Malay intellectual heritage before 1500CE which has become the fundamentals for modern research. The seminar was divided into two sessions: ‘Jaringan Intelektual Buddhisme Antara Melayu-Cina-India’ chaired by Centre for Civilisational Dialogue Director Dr Faridah Noor Mohd Noor from University of Malaya (UM) and ‘Jaringan Intelektual Hinduisme Antara Melayu- Cina-India’ chaired by Dr Ang Lay Hoon from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Topics discussed during the first session included “Hubungan Negara-Negara Kota Awal dengan China: Satu Kronologi” by Nasha Rodzia Khaw from University of Peshawar, Pakistan; “Teks Logik Buddha di Alam Melayu” by Dr Muhammad Alinor Abdul Kadir from the Institute for Mathematical Research, UPM; and “Kesan Falsafah Buddhisme Srivijaya di China dan Tibet” by Dr Tee. The latter session entailed discussions on “Batu-Batu Bersurat Melayu Sebelum1400 TM” by Dr Kumaran Suberamanian from the Department of Indian Studies, UM; “Pengarangan Semula Epik India di Tangan Pengarang Java dan Melayu Masa Silam” by Prof Dr Ding Choo Ming from Institute of Southeast Asean Studies, Singapore; and “Sumbangan Kitab Arthashastra Karangan Kautilya (Kuran Ke 4 Masehi) Di Dalam Pengurusan Sumber Manusia Alam Melayu” by Dr Balakrishnan Muniapan from Wawasan Open University. This seminar was jointly sponsored by UTAR ICS and the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development.
