  • To strengthen the research capacity – through development of infrastructure and capacity building of manpower resources for health research through recruiting PhD students, post-PhD fellows, disseminating expertise and providing consultation services
  • To promote research culture – in collaboration with medical and related health sciences institutions through provision of academic courses and technical training programs for postgraduate students, offering and help in applying grants and funding for research

The Centre for Research on Non-communicable diseases (CRNCD), Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FMHS) organised a webinar titled “Trends in Cadiovascular Research and Rehabilitation” on 18 August 2020 via Microsoft Teams from 9 am to 12 noon. There were a total of 118 participants which comprised UTAR staff, students and members of the public. The organising committee members of the webinar were Dr Hnin Pwint Phyu, Dr Ling Wei Chih and Ms Kiruthika Selvakumar. The invited speakers of the webinar were

1. Dr. Dharmani Devi a/p Murugan, Assoc. Prof of the Department of Pharmacology, University of Malaya

2. Dr Tan Jun Jie, Senior Lecturer/Principal Investigator, Stem Cells and Heart Regeneration Research, Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia

3. Mr Imtiyaz Ali Mir, Senior Lecturer, Department of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UTAR

Dr Hnin. the EmCee, began the webinar by introducing Prof. Dr John Paul Evangel Judson, (Chairperson, CRNCD), who welcomed and addressed the audience in his inaugural address. After a brief introduction to the mission and activities of the CRNCD, he thanked all the eminent speakers for their time and effort taken to participate in the webinar and sharing their knowledge with all the participants. Aside from the speakers, he also appreciated the committee members for their hard work and support that turned this event into a success. He added that he hoped this webinar would lead to many more seminars and webinars collaborators in the future.

After the chairperson’s welcome speech, the webinar was conducted in 3 sessions that were chaired by Prof. Dr Lam Sau Kuen and Dr Ling Wei Chih. The webinar aimed to focus on the three elements of medicine that are related with cardiovascular related diseases: laboratory research, therapeutic applications through stem cell treatment and rehabilitation and training for CVS diseases.

In Dr Dharmani ’s talk titled “Endothelial dysfunction: Why is it important in Cardiovascular Research?, she shared her knowledge about cardiovascular (CVS) diseases, the role of endothelium, how endothelial dysfunction occurs and its role in CVS diseases. She explained how endothelial dysfunction is studied with some examples of the work done in her laboratory.

In the second session, Dr Tan presented his talk titled “Stem Cell therapy for Ischemic Heart Disease”. He explained how stem cells work, and how stems cells can help myocardial regeneration in a damaged heart. He also shared about stem cell therapy clinical trials in the treatment of myocardial infarction.

In Mr Imtiyaz Ali’s talk titled “Efficacy of aerobic interval training vs continuous training on CVS health related outcomes”: he shared his findings about different types of training and activities and their effects on sedentary adults/ inactive young adults in relation to cardiorespiratory parameters.

2Clinical Thyroidology for Undergraduates

The Centre for Research on Non-communicable diseases (CRNCD), Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FMHS) organised a webinar titled “Clinical Thyroidology for Undergraduates” on 21 November 2020 via Microsoft Teams from 9.30 am to 12.30 noon. There was a total of 70 participants which comprised UTAR students and non-UTAR students. The organising committee members of the webinar were Dr Kang Waye Hann and Dr Ling Wei Chih.

The speakers of the webinar was Dr Kang. He is currently a lecturer for Internal Medicine in UTAR and is completing his training in Endocrinology in PPUKM.

This event was started with a brief introduction of himself by Dr Kang. Before he ended his introduction, Dr Kang hoped that students are able to gain more insight regarding clinical thyroidology and encouraged students to voice up if they have any questions.

After that, Dr Kang proceeded to his sharing on the epidemiology of thyroid diseases in Malaysia, followed by basic knowledge regarding thyroidology. Dr Kang had also shared videos regarding the steps to access thyroid function in a patient. After that, Dr Kang conducted case-based discussion with the participants on approaches to management of thyroid-related diseases.

The webinar ended at 12.30 noon with Q&A session.

The Centre for Research on Non-communicable diseases (CRNCD), Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FMHS) organised a webinar titled “Celebrating Women’s Wellness” on 26 November 2020 via Microsoft Teams from 9 am to 1 pm. There was a total of 123 participants which comprised UTAR staff, students and members of the public (local and oversea). This webinar was chaired by Prof Lam Sau Kuen.

The invited speakers of the webinar were

The event started with a welcoming speech by Prof. Dr John Paul Evangel Judson, (Chairperson, CRNCD). After that, Mr Kenneth shared his knowledge regarding the importance of choosing a healthy and balance diet resulted in a healthy lifestyle. The second speaker, Ms Ranjit then shared her knowledge on breast cancer. Her sharing is supplemented by Datin Zainab who later demonstrated the correct technique to do breast examination. The last speaker of the day, Pn Nurfatini shared an interesting talk regarding pelvic health. The webinar ended with a very interactive Q&A session.

5Pretty Healthy with Preetha

Ms Preetha Raaghav who is an Actor, Dancer, Singer, Producer and Emcee in the Tamil Film industry did a free one-hour Virtual session with the CRNCD members during which participants chat with her regarding healthy life-styles, anti-ageing, beauty tips, and more. Ms Preetha has played roles in several films and TV serials. She is a talented Show Host and is now doing a series Pretty Healthy with Preetha. Having obtained her MBA in HR, MS Communication Studies (USA) she is also a Certified International Facilitator and an Executive Coach (USA). Currently she also runs her own Management Consultancy in Chennai, India. During the one-hour sharing session, Ms Preetha initiated the session by sharing how she started her Youtube channel “Pretty Healthy with Preetha”. She followed by sharing with the audience some common skin care routines which are suitable for both genders, as well as some tips to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. This event was conducted via Google Meet and was joined by approximately 30 members and non-members. We have also managed to collect a satisfactory pledge from this event that will be contribute towards the UTAR Hospital fund.
