Description of Centre:Centre for Economic Studies (CES) is one of the research centres at Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). The Centre aims to achieve excellence in research and consultancy and to gain recognition at national- and international level. The research works in the Centre focus on various economic related areas, including financial economics, monetary economics, international economics, sustainable development, and applied macroeconomics. In line with the University's mission to strengthen its research activities, the Centre is a platform for academic staff and graduate students to discuss and to share their research ideas and activities.

Other than that, it involved 97 participants as well as the speaker (Dr Hj Abdul Rahhim Hj Ridzuan, a senior lecturer in Universiti Teknologi Mara, Kampus Melaka).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the speaker’s sharing on importance of being visible as academician; future collaboration opportunities via relevant platforms; and importance of career advancement for academician.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with the number of participants involved were higher than expected and a number of participants have given positive feedbacks regarding the event.

The event was held on the 1 June 2020 (Monday) during 2.00pm - 3.00pm through Microsoft Teams, organized by Centre for Economic Studies with the committee member includes Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran, Chairperson of CES, UTAR). Other than that, it involved 52 participants as well as the speaker (Dr Wong Chin Yoong, an associate professor in Faculty of Business and Economics, UTAR).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the speaker’s sharing on consequences of various financial issues; and ways to enhance knowledge in business, finance and economics in facing the challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with many undergraduates and staffs from different faculties have attended the talk and feedback received were promising.

The event was held on the 3 August 2020 (Monday) during 10.30 a.m. - 12.00 p.m. through Microsoft Teams, co-organized by Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), UTAR and Centre for Economic Studies with the committee members include the Dr Au Yong Hui Nee, the dean of FBF, Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran, the Chairperson of CES, UTAR, and other 4 CES members. Other than that, it involved 72 participants as well as the speaker (Mr Wilson Voon, Director/Principal Consultant of Baldrige Innovation Sdn Bhd).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the speaker’s sharing to individuals especially graduates and staffs regarding plan and strategies for winning solutions in their job search or career advancement/change in this new economic environment.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with the public especially postgraduate students and lecturers from public universities have joined the talk and feedback received were promising.

The event was held on the 1 September 2020 (Tuesday) during 2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. through Microsoft Teams, co-organized by Centre for Economic Studies (CES) and Centre for Accounting, Banking and Finance (CABF) with the committee members include the Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran, the Chairperson of CES; Dr Nurul Afidah Binti Mohamad Jusob @ Mohamad Yusof, Chairperson of CABF, UTAR; and another CES member. Other than that, it involved 115 participants as well as the panelists (Professor Dr. K. Kuperan Viswanathan, Othman Yeop Abdullah, Graduate School of Business, Universiti Utara Malaysia; and Professor Dr. Rokiah Alavi, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia)

The event was held on the 4 September 2020 (Friday) during 11.00 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. through Zoom and Facebook Live, co-organized by Centre for Economic Studies (CES), Department of Economics; and Division of Program Promotion (DPP), UTAR with the committee members include the Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran, the Chairperson of CES; Ms Thavamalar a/p Ganapathy, Head of Department, Department of Economics, Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), UTAR; and other CES members as well as DPP’s members. Other than that, it involved 134 participants as well as the guest speaker (Pn Hasjun Hashim, Head of Bank Negara Malaysia Office, Pulau Pinang).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the speaker’s highlights on the real situation of the financial markets due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the role of policymakers in ensuring the conducive environment; the digitalisation of bank in Malaysia in the future, as well as internship opportunities for UTAR students in BNM have been emphasized during the session; and the promotion of the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Financial Economics programme to attendees.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with the receipt of high number of attendees in Zoom and live via Facebook.

The event was held on the 22 September 2020 (Tuesday) during 3.00pm - 4.30pm through Webinar – Zoom online meeting platform and Facebook Live, co-organized by Centre for Economic Studies (CES) and the Division of Program Promotion (DPP’s Jolene Gan Kah Ling & Mr Sam Kar Seng) UTAR. Other than that, it involved 97 participants as well as the speaker (Dr Au Yong Hui Nee, Dean of Faculty of Business and Finance) and the moderate (Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran, Chairperson of CES).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the discussion on adoption of a systematic and consistent approach to manage risks confronting a company; the notion that effective management could help the companies move beyond compliance to unlock business value especially during health/financial crisis; and promotion of FBF programmes via Zoom and live on FB.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with the receipt of promising feedback especially from those students, industry player, academician and others alike with risk management background.

Discussion on adoption of a systematic and consistent approach to manage risks

The event was held on the 16 October 2020 during 8.30 a.m. - 5.30 p.m. through Microsoft Teams, virtually co-organized for the first time by Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), Centre for Accounting, Banking and Finance (CABF), Centre for Business and Management (CBM), and Centre for Economic Studies (CES) of UTAR, Kampar campus. Other than that, it involved over 50 presenters from India, Indonesia and Pakistan; and the keynote speakers (Associate Professor Dr Sean James Sands, Swinburne University of Technology; and Professor Lai Yew Wah, UTAR’s adjunct professor).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the provision of a platform for scholars and researchers from different institutions, sectors, and regions to exchange ideas and information on critical research issues; the gather of researchers, both locally and internationally for the presentation of up-to-date work that contribute to new theoretical, methodological and empirical knowledge; as well as promoting research development, linkages and knowledge mobilisation among disciplines.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with the conference saw a total of 57 presentations that covered various topics, including Financial Performance and Sustainability; Moving towards Digital Economy; Organisational Behaviour; Digital Technologies; Effective Governance and Taxation; Economic Sustainability; Tourism and the Environment; Organisational Strategy, Education Management. More importantly, sessions of all the above-mentioned topics received encouraging feedback in the aspects of attendances, thorough discussion, as well as further research collaboration arrangement.

8Research Talk: From Idea to Publication & Getting Internationally Recognized Indexation

The event was held on the 22 December 2020 (Tuesday) during 2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. through Microsoft Teams, organized by Centre for Economic Studies (CES), Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), UTAR with the committee members include the Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran, the Chairperson of CES; and other CES members. Other than that, it involved 101 participants as well as the guest speaker (Associate Professor Dr Evan Lau, Managing Editor of international Journal of Business and Society in Faculty of Economics and Business, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak).

In addition, the event’s key outcomes include the speaker’s sharing on two perspectives which benefit the authors and journal editors. Among them, session one focused on the route and journey as an author from idea generation into successful publication in internationally recognized indexed journals. On the other hand, the second session tailored specifically for current and future journal editors. Also, several international indexation criteria have been shared (e.g MyCite, ACI, SCOPUS, ABDC, ESCI) during the event.

Lastly, the event was successfully held with the participants include postgraduate students, staffs and the public from different faculties and universities and with well-received feedback.
