Description of Centre:The Centre for Cancer Research (CCR) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University Tunku Abdul Rahman, aims to provide state-of-the-art facilities and to develop integrated research programmes for fundamental and translational cancer research in Malaysia. The key areas of research will encompass early cancer detection, prognostic monitoring and development of therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment. With the availability of the latest research instrumentations, facilities, cutting-edge technical platforms and concepts, the Centre for Cancer Research will strive to become a prominent cancer research hub in Malaysia.

Break the Barrier of 21st Century

UTAR Centre for Cancer Research and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World Malaysia Chapter (OWSD MC) jointly organised the forum on 12th February at Sungai Long Campus.

The forum is initiated to celebrate and highlight the presence and accomplishments of women in science. It provides a platform for women to share their strengths, talents, and experience and to foster an environment that supports the professional and personal development of women. In addition, the forum enhances scientific communication and networking among participants from various background. Present at the forum were Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Dean Emeritus Prof. Dr Cheong Soon Keng, OWSD-MNC & CCR Chairperson Prof. Ts. Dr Lim Yang Mooi, Organising Chairperson Assist. Prof. Dr Ng Foong Leng, participants of staff, public and students.

The invited speakers for the forum were Professor Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr Aini Ideris, Professor Datin Paduka Dr Teo Soo Hwang, Dr Lim Su Wen and Ms. Fion Poon.

The highlights of the event include topics such as ‘Women leaders for tomorrow’, ‘How to write a winning research proposal and scientific manuscript for publication’, ‘Personality trait for women entrepreneurs’ and ‘My journey as a fashion designer’.

The impact of Covid-19 on cancer patients

CCR and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) organised its inaugural CCR Webinar Series on 21 July 2020 at Microsoft Teams. The webinar titled “The Impact of Covid-19 on Cancer Patients during the MCO Period” saw about 80 participations from UTAR staff, students and members of the public. Sharing their knowledge and expertise in the webinar were FMHS Head of Programme for Postgraduate Programmes-cum-CCR Chairperson Prof Ts Dr Lim Yang Mooi, FMHS Prof Dr Chin Kin Fah, Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia President Ranjit Kaur and Andrea Bariatric Surgery Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeon Dr Andrea Ooi Se-En.

Adult Malignancies and Telemedicine in the Pediatric Neurology

CCR organised its first international webinar on 17th September 2020. It was well attended by staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students from FMHS MBBS, Nursing and Physiotherapy programmes, and Myanmar research institutes and Yangon Children’s hospital.

This Webinar highlights adult malignancies and clinical management guidelines and innovative implementation of telemedicine in paediatric neurology. Professor Kyaw Linn, the senior consultant paediatrician and consultant paediatric neurologist from Yangon Children’s Hospital Yangon, Myanmar reported his work on telemedicine that help many children during this COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasised that telemedicine is one of the way to provide medical consultancy and care to the patients from less accessible areas. He also mentioned that telemedicine could be adopted as one of the teaching tools that can help more patients received medical care. Dr Le Bee Sun, the Head of Department from FMHS provides up-to-date knowledge on acute leukaemia, which briefed the details on how she could obtain medical data from her patients and these data could provide more insights for research and development in the field of acute leukaemia. Professor Alan Ong Han Kiat updated the knowledge of the role of cancer stem cell in breast cancer. His talk has laid down the essential findings on cancer stem cells. Thus, he emphasised that fundamental research on cancer stem cells also is very vital to furnish new knowledge on the characteristic of cancer stem cells, in which this new knowledge could be exploited to create more treatment options for cancer patients.

Associate Professor Dr Yan concluded the webinar by saying, “This webinar reported the use of technology in patient management that this has gradually gained importance among the medical communities, and I hope that this webinar could spark more interest in telemedicine and encourage more research interest among the medical communities”.

Total 111 participants (undergraduate & postgraduate students, Specialists, allied health staffs and specialist) from the various institutions and universities ( Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand and Myanmar) were participated in a fruitful discussion and Q&A session of the event.
