1-Day Workshop on Reinforced Concrete Building Design
and Analysis using MIDAS Gen

Date: 24th November 2017
Venue: KB608 Computer lab, UTAR Sungai Long Campus

Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) organised a workshop on “Reinforced Concrete Building Design and Analysis using MIDAS Gen”. The workshop aims to create awareness of reinforced concrete building design using Eurocode through the use of numerical analysis tool in structural analysis. The workshop was held on 24th November 2015, from 9am to 5pm. It consisted of 4 sessions. The first session revisited the fundamental theories of reinforced concrete building design and analysis. Some common methods of design analyses and their limitations were highlighted to the participants.
In the second session, participants were given hands-on experience on the use of the MIDAS Gen software to solve a simple beam analysis. In the third session, practical modeling of single and multi-storey building was demonstrated to participants. The workshop culminated with participants being given a self-test assignment in the last session to test their proficiency level of carrying out the analysis of a multi-storey building using the software. Table 1 shows the itinerary of the workshop.

The workshop successfully attracted 16 students and 8 staff from Department of Civil Engineering, UTAR. In general, the workshop received good feedback from the participants.

Structural Earthquake Stability 3.0 Intra and Inter University Competition

Date: 12 February 2017 (Intra University) and
18 February 2017 (Inter University)
Venue: MPH, UTAR Sungai Long Campus

UTAR Structural Earthquake Stability (SES) 3.0 is an inter-university competition organized by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) - Student Chapter-UTAR together with Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Student Chapter – UTAR and Department of Civil Engineering, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC-FES).  The purpose of SES 3.0 is to promote practical experience of earthquake engineering through small-scale structural model to the undergraduate by applying the knowledge and theory they have learnt before. Aim of this competition is to enhance students’ engineering knowledge, management skill, creativity and innovation in designing a cost-effective structure to resist seismic loading.

Sunway had sponsors RM14,000 to organize the event with RM8,900 cash and RM5,100 of voucher. For intra-university competition, the prizes given were champion, 1st and 2nd runner-up and two consolation prize. For inter-university competition, the prizes given were champion, 1st and 2nd runner-up, best architectural design, most efficient structure and two consolidation prize. There are overall 20 and 30 teams participate for intra-university competition and inter-university competition respectively. The Inter-university competition successfully attracted participants from both local universities and polytechnics. Besides that, the organizing committee had invited Prof. Ir. Dr. Goi Bok Min to officiate the intra-university competition; and Prof. Ir. Dr. Chuah Hean Teik to officiate the inter-university competition. Other than that, Prof. Dr. Yasuo Tanaka (UTAR), Ir. Adjunct Prof. MC Hee (IEM), Mr. Akira Yabe (Sunway) and Dr. Tan Yean Guan (ICE) as the judges for the inter-university competition. The winner list for inter-university competition is as shown in Table 1.
