This report presents the consultancy and commercialisation statistics and activities for Year 2013 which ended 31 December 2013. 

The consultancy activities have made steady progress over the past years. In the year 2013, the total amount approved has dipped slightly to RM1,067,748.20 as shown in Figure 1.

On the overall value of consultancy/outside works completed as at 31 December 2013, Figure 2 shows that Faculty of Engineering & Science (FES) has the largest share at 34% of the total approved amount in 2013. This is followed by FICT at 17% and FEGT at 15%.

Figure 3 shows the percentage value of approved projects by categories for the year 2013. Advisory/Consultancy constitutes half of all approved projects. This is followed by Training for Industry which forms 40% of all approved projects.

Commercialisation Activities

For the year 2013, UTAR did not sign any commercialisation MoU/MoA. However, DCC is in active discussion with the following organisations and it is expected that the MoU/MoA will be sealed in the first quarter of 2014:

i)      Construction Research Institute of Malaysia – MoU for Web-based Construction Claims Management System.

ii)            ERS Energy Sdn Bhd – MoA for energy storage system.

 

Number of patents filed:

UTAR has to date 13 inventions which have been submitted for patents at the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office (MyIPO) of which 4 were filed in 2013. The 4 patents are as follows:

i)  Fuzzy Control method on Bi-Directional Inverter with Energy Storage for Distribution Networks with Renewable Energy” (PI2013002517) by:

iv)  Interconnecting Bifacial Solar Cells Using Platinum containing Solder Material for Generation of Cheap Solar Electricity” (PI2013004584) by:

Figure 4 shows the number of patents that has been filed for the period 2008 to 2013.

Number of technical assist

In addition to Academia-Industry collaborations, UTAR also aligned its R&D works closely with relevant government bodies such as MSC Malaysia via Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC). There were five projects which have received funding from the “MSC Malaysia Innovation Voucher” in 2013. The projects are as follows:

  1. Development of High Detailed Ceramic Gifts via Computer Aided Design by  Mr Tan Han Keong from FCI.
  2. Designing a fast Data Mining Framework for Large Data Set” – by Dr Ooi Boon Yaik from FICT.
  3. GNTrack - Vehicle, Asset and Personal GPS” – by Dr Teh Peh Chiong from FEGT.
  4. Development of Automated Growing and Harvesting System” – by Engr. Lai Koon Chun from FEGT.
  5.  System Control and Embedded Software for PC Communication with Industrial Inkjet Printer” – by Mr Ooi Joo On from FICT.

 

   

UTAR Microalgae Sdn Bhd (UMSB) activities

UMSB was incorporated in January 2010 with the purpose of cultivating and selling of microalgae culture. UMSB is now headed by its acting CEO Dr. Choo Peng Yin. The company continues to sustain its operations by organising and developing its own commercial and research related activities.

  

Prospect for the Year 2014

For year 2014 the Department of Consultancy and Commercialisation will continue to promote and encourage consultancy and commercialisation works amongst the academia as well as to align its efforts in elevating UTAR SETARA’s status.
