Centre Name:

Centre for Vehicular Technology

Chairperson:

Assoc. Prof Dr. Chew Kuew Wai

Description of Centre:

The Center for Vehicular Technology is set up to lead research and innovation in the field of automobile and vehicular technology. The mission of the Vehicular Technology Research Center is to deliver sustainable technological advantages for the universities, government agencies and industries involved in the research, development, manufacturing and services based on the applications of vehicular technology. Currently, the vehicular industries in Malaysia (especially in the automotive markets) are one of the major economic pillars for Malaysia. There are numerous challenges and impact factors faced by the industry, which requires multi-disciplinary research and collaborations. Thus, a Research Center in Vehicular Technology is timely to establish the research strategy and forms alliances to tackle those challenges and industry impacts.

Our current research strategy will focus on topics as proposed by the available expertise and resources based on the current industry challenges and technological impact factors. This bottom up approach can spurred the academics’ creativities as the researchers have free hand to exploit ideas and interests based on their professional know how. However, we will continuously monitoring the industry activities to make sure we deliver to what the industry needs in the future. We have to maintain comprehensive understanding of the automobile industry from upstream to downstream value chain, such as material processing and equipments, assembly and equipments to knowledge management and information processing as well as the world wide R&D trends that have shifted to advance automobile/vehicular technology, such as fuel cell, special mission vehicles and intelligent vehicular system etc.

Research area:

  • Autonomous Vehicle Systems & Vehicle Design
  • Intelligent Transportation System & Vehicle Safety
  • Alternative Fuel
  • Electrically Powered Vehicle
  • Failure Analysis – Transportation System

Highlights of activities

Seminar/talks organized by CVT

1. Seminar by Prof. Edwin Chong, "My career path toward being a professor at Colorado State University and IEEE Fellow ", 29 May 2013, DK1, FES 2-4pm.

2. Half-day Seminar on Construction of Pantai 2 Sewage Treatment Plant (P2STP),   26th June 2013 (Wednesday), UTAR, FES, SA block, 6th floor meeting room

On 26th June 2013, a P2STP half-day seminar has been succesfully conducted in Meeting Room, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. The half-day seminar began at 2.00 pm and ended at 6.00 pm and was attended by almost 100 participant which consists under-graduate students, lecturers and guest from IWK.

The objective of this seminar is to provide the student of Civil Engineering early exposure of the requirement and the needs of industry. It also an effort to enable the students to gain knowledge and experience in the constrcution sector especially the construction of the sewage treatment plant.

The seminar was divided into four main topic. The first topic entitled “Project Briefing” was presented by Tuan Haji Mohd Subuki Fadzil, BEWG Chief Technical Officer. The second topic entitled “Process M&E Design” was presented by Engr Low Thong Soon from BEWG. The third topic is title “Geotechnical Design” was presented by Ir. Leong Shian Loong from EEC. For the last topic, the students are acquainted to Puan Zarina Rushdi also from EEC. Puan Zarina has presented a lecture entitled “Structural Design”.

Overall, the feedback provided by the students abouat thie program is very encouraging. This is due to the sharing of experience and information among students and engineers were limited.

The university also we honored to deliver a token of appreciation to each speaker. The ceremony ended with a loud applause from everyone involved.

EEE Workshop on Geoscience and Remote Sensing 2013 was held at Multimedia University (MMU), Melaka campus. This was the first annual workshop organised by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Malaysia chapter (GRSS). This workshop aimed to provide a forum for GRSS members, researchers and students to share the recent development and advancement in geosciences and remote sensing technologies, particularly in the context of Earth observation, disaster monitoring and risk assessment.

The workshop was opened by welcome speech from the Chair of IEEE GRSS Malaysia, Ir. Prof. Academician, Dato’ Chuah Hean Teik. It was followed by the special keynote address “A Scope of Asian Micro-satellite Programme” by Professor Yukihiro Takahashi, Hokkaido University which presented the latest development of micro-satetllite technologies in Japan and call for a regional micro-satellite consortium. Technical visit to Centre for Remote Sensing and Surveillance Technologies, MMU was organised in parallel with a tutorial on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). In the afternoon, the  invited papers covered various aspects from sensor technologies to Earth observation applications. A 1-day intensive programme was well attended by lecturers, researchers and students from public and private organisations and universities. Next year event will be hosted by Science and Technology Research Institute for Defence (STRIDE) in Kuala Lumpur.

The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Malaysia chapter (GRSS) was established in late 2012. It is currently chaired by Dato’ Prof. Chuah Hean Teik, President of UTAR. Dr. Tuong-Thuy Vu of School of Geography, University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus was appointed as Secretary of the chapter and is continually contributing to all activities of the chapter.
