Highlights of activities
FICT Career Fair
2013
The FICT
Career Day is a bi-annual event where companies from the Information Technology
industry are invited into the campus and meet the students. It is considered as
students’ “practical lab sessions” for “successful job seeking” where at the
end of the day, students would gain market, industrial exposure, interview
skills and the process of job seeking.
In
2013, two Career Fairs have been organized successfully.
Date: 6th March 2013
Time: 8am to 5pm
Venue: Block N, FICT, UTAR
A total of 10 companies participated in the event. UTAR FICT
also took up a slot to introduce postgraduate study opportunities in the
faculty to the undergraduate students. A series of talks were given by the
representatives from these companies where students get to know the company’s
background and product, job expectation, employee benefits and the state of the
industry in general. The participating companies are:
1. Swisslog
2. Lintramax
3. Silverlake
4. Jobstreet
5. ManagePay
6. Hilti
7. OCBC
8. DreamCatcher
9. Philip Capital
10. Web Bytes
11. UTAR FICT

Time: 8am to 5pm
Venue: Block N, FICT, UTAR
In the 2nd FICT Career Fair 2013, a total of eleven companies participated. There was a good response from the students where more than 100 FICT students participated.
The participating companies are:- Lintramax
- Quintip
- Silverlake
- Dream Catcher
- Hilti
- CTC

Interesting Ideas
I Learned From Teaching Stochastic Processes
Date: 6th March 2013
Time: 8am to 5pm
Venue: Block N, FICT, UTAR
Event Type: CISST Knowledge Sharing Session
Speaker: Dr. Ng Yen Kaow (FICT Lecturer)
Content: In this knowledge sharing session, Dr.
Ng Yen Kaow shared his knowledge in Stochastic Processes where he gave a
technical presentation on Markov Chain and queuing theory.
Date: 23rd April 2013
Event Type: Knowledge Sharing Seminar
Event Type: CISST Knowledge Sharing Session
Speaker: Mr.
Goh Hock Guan (FICT lecturer)
In this knowledge sharing session, Mr.
Goh Hock Guan gave an introduction to LTE that covered both LTE and EPC.
LTE, an acronym for Long Term
Evolution, commonly marketed as 4G LTE, is a standard for wireless
communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. It is
based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies, increasing the
capacity and speed using a different radio interface together with core network
improvements. The standard is developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership
Project).
Money Laundering
Date: 28th May 2013
Event Type: Talk (Industry)
Speaker: Mr. Satish S.S from Tess International. TESS International which is a leading regional financial software application providers.
In this talk, Mr. Satish provided some background understanding about the use of anti-Money Laundering (AML) software to detect and curb the activities of money laundering that are common among banking institutions in the global environment.
GPUGPU Programming
Using NVIDIA CUDA
Date: 23th October 2013
Time: 9:30am – 11:30am
Venue: N109, UTAR-PK
Event Type: CISST Knowledge Sharing Seminar Series
Speaker: Mr. Lee Wai Kong (FICT Lecturer)
In this sharing session, Mr. Lee Wai Kong shared his expertise on GPUGPU Programming. He introduced the GPU platform and then showed basic GPU programming using the NVIDIA platform for various applications. Some intermediate-level GPU programming concepts were also given for users to explore more after mastering the basic concepts. Lastly, Mr. Lee gave a demo to showcase the powerful features of GPU programming at the end of the workshop.
About GPUGPU: GPUGPU is gaining popularity recently due to its massively parallel structure and flexible programming model. It is especially popular in the field of scientific simulation, weather forecasting, bio-medical imaging and artificial intelligence. Many conventional algorithms that run in general processor can be re-structured to run in GPU for much faster execution speed.
The 2nd FICT Postgraduate Colloquium
Date: 19th November 2013
Time: 11:30am to 5:20pm
Venue: N109, UTAR-PK
Event Type: Postgraduate Colloquium
Speakers: Postgraduate students in FICT.
The Colloquium is an annual event for postgraduate students of FICT to exchange ideas and gather feedback on their research progress and findings. It also serves as an opportunity for students to refine their presentation skills. Through this interaction, students is expected to gain exposure on different fields of research undertaken by students in the faculty.
