Title : Some practical aspects of installing a split-type
air-conditioning equipment
The proper
operation of split-type air-conditioning equipment is very much dependent on
how well the unit has been installed. Care must be taken in running the
connecting copper pipes between the indoor and outdoor units of the system. Adequate
vacuuming of the piping before charging the refrigerant is crucial to ensure
reliable running of the compressor. The outdoor units should be installed at
appropriate location to prevent short-circuiting of hot discharge air, or hot stack
effect. The indoor unit should also be positioned to give the best distribution
of conditioned air within the space. It is vital that periodic maintenance to
be done on the equipment for longer operating life. The talk would also
introduce and briefly cover on the fundamentals of split air conditioning systems.
Dr. Chin Wai
Meng graduated with a 1st Class hons degree in Mechanical Engineering from University
Malaya in 1990 and obtained his PhD from Universiti Teknologi Petrobas in 2011.
He is currently Senior Manager of O.Y.L. Research & Development Center Sdn.
Bhd. having been with them for 23 years. His core expertise is in the design of
test facilities for air-conditioning systems and heat transfer experimentation,
performance and reliability analysis of refrigeration cycle for air
conditioning systems and instrumentations. He has co-supervised several postgraduate
students from local and private universities in Malaysia on air-conditioning
related projects. He has also contributed as a member of the Industrial
Advisory Panel (IAP) in Monash University Sunway Campus, Segi University
College and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. In 2013, Dr Chin was appointed by
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to be the Technical Consultant to the
Technical Working Group (TWG) which is tasked to harmonize the testing
standards used within ASEAN region for performance rating of air-conditioners.
Dr. Chin is a member of ASHRAE and ASME. He has authored various joint Papers
and contributed various books and manuals in the air conditioning fields.

the collaboration possible, and conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to Daniel
for his support in fostering the UTAR-Beckhoff partnership. "It marks a
mutually beneficial partnership between UTAR and Beckhoff in bringing
industry-relevant support to enhance the learning, teaching and research at
UTAR, and in providing a valued channel to network and build industry links for
our students," said Prof Chuah.
Daniel
in his speech said that Beckhoff is proud to be associated with UTAR which was
awarded Tier 5 (Excellent) in SETARA 2011 and Tier 5 (Excellent) in D-SETARA
for its Engineering programmes, apart from holding an impressive track record
where 97% of its graduates are employed within six months after graduation.
"The MOU signed here today will provide us with a committed approach to
working more closely with UTAR, and to supporting its goal to become a global
university of educational excellence and transformative societal impact,"
said Daniel.
Among
