Description of Centre:	The telecommunication industry is experiencing tremendous revolution. Improvements for fixed wired and wireless communications are continually innovated to fulfil current and future communication needs. The industry is challenged to provide more mobility, multimedia support and quality assurance. In order to address the needs of the envisioned interconnected world, research and development in communication systems and networks are intensively pursued. The Centre for Communication Systems and Networks is established to spearhead research and innovation work in broadband network technologies, wireless networking systems, communication theory and applications, and Applied Electromagnetics.
Research area:	1. Broadband Network Technologies and Management, 2. Wired and Wireless Internetworking Systems, 3. Communication Theory & Applications, 4. Applied Electromagnetics.

Highlights of activities

2013 International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy Technologies at UTAR

ICSGCE 2013 has been held successfully at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur during Oct. 11 to Oct. 13, 2013. The conference was chaired by Assoc Prof. Yun Seng Lim on behalf of the General Chair, Prof. Danny Sutanto.

Prof. Hean Teik Chuah, the President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and the Co-Chair of ICSGCE 2013, gave a welcome address to all participants. ICSGCE 2013 offered four wonderful keynote speeches, all participants felt refreshed and actively discussed with speakers.

The keynote speakers and their topics are listed as follows:-

      1.      Prof V Terzija, University of Manchester, UK, Topic: Advanced Computational          Methods for Real-Time Operation of Smart Grids  

      2.      Prof G. Kumar Venayagamoorthy, Clemson University, USA, Topic: Condition           Monitoring and Asset Management in Smart Grid 

      3.    Prof Zhengke Zhou, Glasgow Caledonian University, UK, Topic: Smart                       Transmission Grid Challenges 

      4.      Assoc Prof Yun Seng Lim, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia,                         Topic: Active Energy Management System for LVDNs Integrated with                          Renewable Energy Sources

50 papers have been accepted for the conference. All participants presented their papers at the four sessions respectively and shared their ideas and experience with each other. All manuscripts submitted will be peer reviewed by ICSGCE TPC. The Conference proceeding will be indexed by EI Compendex. Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version for possible inclusion in the special issue of Journal of Electronic Science and Technology (http://www.intl-jest.com), which is a DOAJ journal, indexed by Ei in INSPEC, America CA (Chemical Abstracts), CNKI (China), and Wanfang (China), and also included in Oriprobe and Academic Publishing Platform.

Almost all of participants were deeply impressed with the atmosphere of ICSGCE in which they found potential collaborations with each other.  All participants were also satisfied with the conference organizers for their thorough arrangement and their idea to emphasize the academic exchange.
