CCIS Talk: Technological Advancements in Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for High Performance Computing
20/9/2013

UTAR’s Centre for Computing and Intelligent Systems (CCIS) hosted a talk by two industry experts on Graphics Processing Units (GPU) computing, Dr. Simon See from Nvidia and Dr. Ettikan K.K. from MIMOS, on the 20th of September 2013.  The two distinguished speakers visited UTAR to share their knowledge on application trends and the latest technology updates and directions on GPU Computing on Nvidia’s CUDA platform specifically and parallel processing in general.

Dr. Ettikan, who is a Principal Researcher at MIMOS and also the Director of the Accelerative Technology Lab for the ICT Division, MIMOS was the first speaker. He shared some of the problems that MIMOS has been working on in collaboration with Nvidia, Malaysian industry partners, and governmental organisations.

He explained about the problems of trying to process big data, and how MIMOS is using Nvidia’s GPUs in order to help accelerate solutions for problems that used to be in the domain of super computers. MIMOS is also working on a parallel computing library called MiAccLib that will help customers quickly accelerate their computing solutions.

Dr. Simon See, who is the Director and Chief Architect of NVIDIA Asia Pacific Professional Solution Group, was the second speaker of the talk. He highlighted the importance of parallel programming in general and for GPUs in particular. He also updated the audience on the direction of GPU computing evolution, and described some of the work done by institutes and universities overseas in enhancing and supplementing Nvidia’s CUDA platform for diverse applications ranging from financial computations to the oil and gas industry. GPU computing using Nvidia’s platform has experienced a boom worldwide in recent years due to the ability to perform super-computing at low cost, and having an easy to use CUDA parallel programming and computing platform with many supporting libraries and applications.

Overall, the attendees who were composed of lecturers and students from UTAR, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) benefitted greatly from the talk and have been instilled with a better understanding of industry problems of processing big data, and approaches in solving them using GPU computing. We believe that this talk will help to stoke the fire to create a more active and vibrant research community on GPU Computing in UTAR and Malaysia.
