Consultancy & Commercialisation Report

This report presents the consultancy and commercialisation statistics and activities for the year 2017.

Consultancy

The consultancy activities have made steady progress over the past years. In year 2017, 512 applications were approved with an estimated value of RM1,700,875.46 as shown in Figure 1. This involved 374 UTAR staff as shown in Figure 2.

From the total of RM1,700,875.46, 70.7% is under the category of Personal Consultancy while 29.3% is under the University Consultancy category as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 4 shows the approved value by faculty. Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) has the largest share at 25.9% of the total approved amount in 2017. This is followed by Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) at 18.2% and Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) at 15.5%.

Figure 5 shows the percentage value of approved projects by categories for the year 2017. Training constituted 48% of all approved projects. This is followed by Consultancy at 25% and R&D at 23%.

Commercialisation Activities

UTAR received a total of RM16,292.45 as a royalty payment for the invention “Buoyant Platform System”. In addition, UTAR signed a royalty payment agreement with RBN Biotech Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Royal Bird’s Nest Sdn Bhd for the commercialisation of the invention “Extraction Method for Bird’s Nest Extract Using Customised Apparatus”.

    DCC will continue to work with business and industry associations such as Federation of Manufacturers Malaysia (FMM) and Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (KLSCCCI) to enhance UTAR’s collaboration with the SME/SMI.
    Figure 6 shows the number of patents filed for the period of 2008 to 2017. The status for the 21 inventions is shown in Table 1.
